Couture Military Jacket DIY

I love vintage military style.  All of the gold embroidery and big beautiful brass buttons look so chic! Military style jackets look fantastic with everything from jeans and basic tee to a floral sundress.  Just take a peek at last month's Vogue magazine.  Now, you can make yourself a beautiful military inspired jacket from one of your old blazers...and guess what....there is hardly any sewing involved!  The only thing you have to sew on is the buttons.  You'll look just like you stepped off of the runway.

YOU'LL NEED
Black blazer
Heavy black fabric (cotton twill)
(or gold puff paint)
Scissors
Gold buttons
Gold Ribbon
Needle and thread
Print out this pattern (or create your own)
Trace the pattern on the black fabric and draw a line down the center
Fill in the feather with the Allure Metallic Gold and let dry
*You'll need 14 feathers
Remove the buttons from the blazer (and on the cuff, too)
Press the lapel flat with an iron
Cut out the feathers and figure out the placement on the jacket
Glue on the feathers with E-6000 Fabri-fuse and let dry
Using needle and thread, stitch on the buttons at the base of each feather
down the center of the jacket
Apply gold ribbon to the cuff with more Fabri-fuse
Pin in place until dry

  1. This is a wonderful idea, and I appreviate the tutorial. I'm wondering if the feathers could be painted directly onto the jacket?

    1. Hi Joan, I thought about that a lot actually. It was MUCH easier to manipulate the smaller pieces of fabric one at a time then a whole jacket. Plus I could get them more uniform and if I squeezed out too much paint and messed up, I could make another feather. On the jacket, it might not have been that easy. Hope that helps!
